BridgeDetroit Honored with National and Local Journalism Awards

BridgeDetroit, a dedicated local news outlet, has recently been celebrated for its outstanding contributions to journalism, earning prestigious awards both nationally and locally. Earlier this month, the organization was recognized by the National Headliner Awards as the best independent community/local news site in the country. This accolade underscores BridgeDetroit’s commitment to providing high-quality reporting that prioritizes the needs and voices of Detroit residents.

National Recognition

The National Headliner Awards, which have been honoring excellence in journalism for over 90 years, praised BridgeDetroit for its clear mission and comprehensive reporting. The judges highlighted the outlet’s ability to place Detroiters at the forefront of its coverage, a testament to its community-first approach.

In addition to the site-wide recognition, former BridgeDetroit reporter Malachi Barrett received a third-place award for his digital newsletter, ‘City Council Notebook,’ which continues to engage readers with insights into local governance.

Local Achievements

On a local level, BridgeDetroit was honored with nine awards from the Society of Professional Journalists Detroit Chapter’s Excellence in Journalism Awards. These included first-place finishes for an election-focused podcast, food writing, and collaborative work. The awards celebrate the newsroom’s dedication to addressing critical issues and fostering community engagement.

BridgeDetroit founder and Executive Advisor Stephen Henderson was also recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award, alongside other notable figures in journalism, for his enduring contributions to the field.

Furthermore, BridgeDetroit’s efforts were acknowledged by the Michigan Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest, where they received nine awards. Notably, Jena Brooker won the Public Service Award-Local Category for the third consecutive year, highlighting her impactful coverage of environmental and food sovereignty issues in Detroit.

The sister publication, Bridge Michigan, also excelled, winning numerous awards and being named News Media Publication of the Year, further demonstrating the strength and influence of these journalistic endeavors.

While awards are a significant honor, BridgeDetroit remains focused on its mission to challenge injustices, raise awareness of vital issues, and hold local authorities accountable. The organization continues to invite community support to sustain its nonprofit newsroom and further its impactful work.
