Brewers’ Abner Uribe Faces Suspension for Actions Against Cardinals

Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Abner Uribe has been handed a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine by Major League Baseball for his actions during a game against the St. Louis Cardinals earlier this week. The incident occurred after Uribe struck out Alec Burleson to end an inning, following which he made gestures towards the Cardinals’ dugout.

Incident Details

Uribe’s actions came during the eighth inning of the Brewers’ 6-0 victory over the Cardinals. After retiring Burleson on a called third strike with runners on first and second, Uribe performed three WWE-style crotch chops facing the Cardinals’ dugout. The Cardinals had challenged the strike call, but it was confirmed to be within the strike zone.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy expressed his disapproval of Uribe’s behavior, stating it was unacceptable. “We accept the fact that MLB has a job to do and I’ll be the first one to say what Abner did is unacceptable,” Murphy said. He added that Uribe has the right to appeal the suspension, which he has chosen to do, allowing him to be available for the upcoming series against the Houston Astros.

Apologies and Past Incidents

Uribe, speaking through an interpreter, apologized to his team but did not extend an apology to the Cardinals. “Everyone here knows me and knows who I am, and knows I have a bit of a history of being emotional out there,” Uribe said. He acknowledged the need to apologize to his teammates, manager, and team executives.

This is not the first time Uribe has faced disciplinary action. In April 2024, he was suspended for six games and fined following a benches-clearing brawl against the Tampa Bay Rays. Manager Murphy noted that Uribe was not available to pitch the day after the incident and that the team has addressed the matter internally.
