Boy on bicycle injured near James Madison Middle School in Brevard County

Early Monday morning, a boy riding his bicycle westbound on the sidewalk of Dairy Road was struck near the entrance to James Madison Middle School in Titusville, Brevard County, according to the Titusville Police Department.

The juvenile was attempting to cross the school’s driveway when a driver, who had stopped briefly, failed to see him and continued forward. Police reports indicate the vehicle’s tires did not actually make contact with the child, but the impact was enough to warrant immediate medical attention.

Out of an abundance of caution, emergency responders airlifted the boy to a nearby hospital. Hospital officials later confirmed that the injuries were not serious, and the child is expected to make a full recovery.

Police response and investigation

Officers arrived on the scene shortly after the incident and began a preliminary investigation. The driver was questioned, and no charges have been filed at this time. Police emphasized that the driver stopped before moving forward, suggesting a momentary lapse in awareness rather than reckless behavior.

Authorities are reminding motorists to remain vigilant, especially in school zones where children are present. The Titusville Police Department urges drivers to obey posted speed limits, watch for pedestrians on sidewalks, and be prepared to stop suddenly.

Community safety considerations

The incident has sparked a brief conversation among parents and school officials about pedestrian safety around the school’s entrance. While the boy’s injuries were minor, the event underscores the importance of safe crossing practices for both cyclists and pedestrians.

James Madison Middle School’s administration has not issued a formal statement, but school staff typically encourage students to use designated crosswalks and to remain alert for traffic when approaching the school’s driveway.

What parents can do

Parents are encouraged to teach their children proper road safety habits, such as looking both ways before crossing, using hand signals when riding bicycles, and wearing visible clothing. Additionally, families can consider alternative routes that keep cyclists away from high‑traffic entry points.

Local law enforcement continues to monitor the area and will work with the school district to assess whether additional signage or traffic calming measures are needed to prevent future incidents.

Next steps

The Titusville Police Department will complete its investigation and release any further findings as appropriate. In the meantime, the community is reminded that vigilance and respect for one another on the road are essential to keeping children safe.
