Police in Bourne, Massachusetts, are warning beachgoers of potential hazards after more than 100 nails were found in the sand at Sagamore Beach. The nails were left behind after a pallet was used as firewood for a beach fire and then burned, leaving the nails buried in the sand.
Beach Safety Concerns
According to Bourne Police Chief Brandon Esip, the nails can be a hidden hazard for beachgoers, especially for families with children who may be digging in the sand. The police department is stepping up enforcement of beach fires to prevent such incidents.
Beachgoers expressed concern about the danger, with one saying, “I would be so mad if I stepped on a nail.” Another beachgoer, who has helped with cleanup efforts, described the difficulty of removing the nails from the sand.
The police department is asking people to leave fires at home and help keep Bourne beaches safe. “We want people to enjoy themselves, but clearly having something hazardous under the sand is a danger,” Chief Esip said.
