Boston city councilors have proposed an extension of the Orange Line as an alternative to a dedicated center bus lane on Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan. District 7 Councilor Miniard Culpepper and District 4 Councilor Brian Worrell presented their plan, which includes eight additional stops, to MBTA General Manager and interim Massachusetts Transportation Secretary Phillip Eng.
Proposal Details
The proposed extension would improve public transit on Blue Hill Avenue, which has been a topic of discussion for years. The city and state have been considering ways to enhance the crowded commuter corridor, but some community members have expressed opposition to the dedicated bus lane. Culpepper and Worrell believe that the Orange Line extension would be a better long-term investment.
Creating a new section of subway would be a significant undertaking, but Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is open to discussing the idea. The scope and scale of the project, including the overall cost, are concerns that need to be addressed. Culpepper emphasized that solutions can be found if all parties involved are willing to work together.
MassDOT is conducting a study to determine the feasibility of expanding transit service between the Forest Hills Orange Line station and the Roslindale Village commuter rail station. The study will analyze scenarios for future rapid transit, including potential alignment for Orange Line service or more frequent commuter rail service.
