Border czar Homan says federal probe into Rep. Ilhan Omar remains active

White House border czar Tom Homan told Fox News over the weekend that the Department of Homeland Security is still conducting a criminal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar (D‑MN). Homan declined to share specifics, but said Immigration and Customs Enforcement is leading the probe.

Homan’s remarks

“I know things are going on, but I can’t give specifics of what’s happening,” Homan said. “If someone committed an immigration violation, if someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they’re a congressperson or not, no one’s above the law. So, I’ll leave it at that.” He added that he had previously indicated that a report had been filed and needed review.

Background on the allegations

Omar, who has represented Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District since 2019, immigrated to the United States in 1995. Critics have long claimed that she married her brother to obtain citizenship, a charge she called “disgusting lies” in 2016. Federal officials say the investigation has been ongoing for some time, though no charges have been filed.

Responses from the congresswoman and DHS

When asked for comment, Omar said she had no knowledge of what investigators might be looking into and added, “they will absolutely not find anything.” In December, she described the effort to examine her records as “sick.” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin recently reiterated the allegation, stating, “We know that she married her brother to try to bring him to the United States. We know he now lives in London.” Mullin suggested that if evidence of illegal entry is proven, denaturalization and possible deportation could follow.

President Trump’s stance

President Trump has repeatedly criticized Omar. In a May speech in Florida, he said, “Get the hell out. What a phony. She married her brother to come in. I would imagine they are looking at her… I have nothing to do with it.” He also called her “despicable.” The administration’s position aligns with the border czar’s emphasis on rule of law and the need for thorough investigation.

What this means for the public

The ongoing probe underscores the administration’s focus on immigration enforcement and the principle that no elected official is exempt from legal scrutiny. While the investigation remains confidential, the public statements from Homan, Mullin, and President Trump signal a continued commitment to addressing alleged immigration fraud at the highest levels of government.

Next steps

Federal investigators have not set a timeline for concluding the inquiry. Should evidence of wrongdoing emerge, the Department of Justice could pursue denaturalization proceedings, which would be a prerequisite for any deportation action. Until then, the case remains under the jurisdiction of DHS and ICE, with updates expected as the investigation progresses.
