Members of the Booneville community gathered Friday evening at First Baptist Church to grieve the loss of two teenagers who died in a crash at Booneville Lake Thursday night.
Community Comes Together
The church opened its doors offering community members a place to come together and support one another in the wake of the tragedy. A steady stream of people entered the church throughout the evening.
According to investigators, the crash happened Thursday night when a pickup truck carrying three teenage boys was traveling along Old Highway 10. Authorities say the truck failed to negotiate a curve, went down an embankment and entered Booneville Lake.
One of the teenagers was able to escape the truck and call for help. He was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover. The other two teenagers died in the crash.
Investigators said it took approximately two hours for dive teams and emergency responders to recover the submerged truck from the lake.
Earlier Friday, the Booneville School District released a statement expressing its condolences. “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of two members of our Bearcat family,” the district said. “As a school community, we will continue to support one another through the days ahead.”
Authorities have not released the names of the individuals involved in the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
