BookMarx, a downtown Springfield bookshop, is hosting a weeklong grand opening for its expanded store, beginning Friday evening, July 24. The expansion includes the property directly to the east that used to house Austen Boutique, which closed in April.
Expanded Offerings
With the added space, BookMarx is offering an expanded children’s section as well as plenty more books. This year, BookMarx also started doing movie rentals with Mr. Googorium’s Movie Emporium, which is named after the late shop cat, Googey.
A ribbon-cutting will take place at the store Friday at 5 p.m. with the assistance of Ms. Cyrano, the newest shop cat. The ribbon-cutting will usher in a week full of events in celebration, which will start with an opening party on Friday following the ceremony.
Upcoming Events
Party attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite author or literary character and send a postcard. Donations of household items will be collected for The Kitchen, Inc, a Springfield nonprofit dedicated to providing emergency shelter, case management and housing assistance.
Literary events are planned for the week following the grand opening. Authors in attendance will be Andrew Dietz, Mar the Ghost, Daniel Cochran, Eletha Thompson, Andie Kern and Eve Peregrine.
A book club on “Yesteryear,” a novel by Caro Claire Burke, will take place on Thursday, July 30 at 7 p.m. Friday, July 31, will bring author Devin Thomas O’Shea to BookMarx to discuss “The Veiled Prophet,” a new book about a secret society that had a major influence on St. Louis for over a century. The discussion will begin at 7 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 1, will bring the week to a close with Saturday Stories with David Harrison, a children’s author and poet based in Springfield. Harrison is Drury’s Poet Laureate and was Missouri’s from 2023 to 2025.
