Mathew Bowyer, a 51-year-old bookmaker from Orange County, has been released from prison after serving seven months for running an illegal sports betting business and cheating on taxes. Bowyer, who had around 1,200 clients, including Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, made approximately $1 million per month at the height of his operation.
Bowyer’s Operation and Its Consequences
Bowyer’s business lasted for 25 years before he was caught and sentenced. He expressed no regret over running the illegal operation, stating it made him who he is today. However, as part of his probation, Bowyer is not allowed to gamble for two years and must attend weekly meetings for gambling addictions. Additionally, he has to pay about $9 million to the IRS in back taxes, penalties, and interest.
Bowyer also mentioned that Nevada gaming officials visited him in prison and placed him on a list of excluded individuals, banning him from entering any Nevada casinos for life. Now back home, Bowyer plans to continue working on a second book, focusing on his life after prison.
