A bomb exploded in the entrance of an apartment building in Monaco, injuring Ukrainian-born oligarch Vadym Yermolaiev, 58, a woman, and a 13-year-old child. The bombing is the first of its kind in Monaco’s history.
Investigation Underway
Prince Albert II, Monaco’s head of state, described the bombing as an ‘odious act’ and mobilized the police to hunt for the attacker. The police have launched an investigation into ‘attempted premeditated murder and placing an explosive device in a public area.’
Monaco is known for its high level of safety and security, with 556 police officers patrolling the country, which is half the size of Central Park. The country has a network of 1,387 CCTV and facial recognition cameras monitored 24 hours a day.
The government is spending millions to increase security along its northern border with France. The suspect in the bombing was captured on CCTV walking up the street and into France, and remains at large despite a manhunt involving both Monegasque and French police.
