Starting Nov. 1, the City of Boise will open three popular parks for off‑leash dog activity: Ann Morrison Park, the Optimist Youth Sports Complex on the west side, and, beginning Nov. 16, the Simplot Sports Complex on the east side. The seasonal allowance runs through the end of February, giving families and their canine companions a chance to enjoy wide‑open spaces during the cooler months.
Community response
Local resident Nancy Cannon, who has lived in Boise for fifteen years, said the new access brings joy to both dogs and owners. “When this opens up and the dogs jump out of the car, you can see the smile on their faces and that’s the truth,” Cannon said. “I’ve never seen a place this nice in any town I’ve lived in. It means everything.” She added that the park has become a social hub, noting, “It’s our social hour and this is where I met all of my friends after I moved here.”
Responsibility and upkeep
City officials stress that the privilege comes with responsibility. Cannon, who has taken it upon herself to tie poop‑bag dispensers to park fences, said she will remind anyone who neglects cleanup. “At the end of the seasonal off‑leash period, we walk the whole thing with our bags and pick up anything we find,” she explained. “We know it is a privilege to be here and we don’t want to lose it.”
What to expect
All three locations will be clearly marked as off‑leash areas during the season. Dog owners are asked to keep their pets under control, respect other park users, and promptly pick up waste. The city will monitor the parks and may adjust policies based on community feedback and safety considerations.
Looking ahead
The seasonal program is part of Boise’s broader effort to provide family‑friendly recreation while maintaining clean, safe public spaces. Residents are encouraged to enjoy the parks responsibly and to share any concerns with the Parks & Recreation Department.
