Boeing is taking another massive charge to get the Air Force One project back on track. The company announced it’s adding significant resources to deliver the heavily modified 747-8 jets by 2028, which will cost an additional $280 million.
Air Force One Project Delays
The Air Force One project has been plagued by delays and cost overruns, with the total cost now surpassing $3.1 billion. Boeing has agreed to foot the bill for the project, which was initially estimated to cost $3.9 billion.
Former President Donald Trump took a particular interest in the new Air Force One planes, persuading former Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun to sign a government contract in 2018. However, the project has faced numerous challenges, including engineering design changes, schedule delays, and performance issues at a key supplier.
The existing presidential planes have been in service since 1990 and have become costly to fly and repair. The government deemed them in need of replacement in 2015.
