Boeing Employees’ Flying Club? No — Renton’s Skyport Is Your New Favorite Lakeside Escape

There is a moment — and if you have experienced it, you know exactly what I am talking about — when a floatplane lifts off a glassy lake surface and the entire world goes quiet except for the hum of the engine and the soft splash of water falling away beneath the hull. I had that moment at Renton Municipal Airport, also known as Clayton Scott Field, and it changed the way I think about this quietly remarkable city sitting at the southern tip of Lake Washington.

Renton Municipal Airport sits right at the water’s edge in the Renton Landing neighborhood, sandwiched between the shimmering lake and the busy hum of the city. Most people drive past it on Logan Avenue North without giving it a second glance. That is their loss, and honestly, your gain — because the crowd has not discovered this gem yet, and the experience is all the better for it.

What makes this airport genuinely special is its dual identity. On one side, you have a fully active general aviation airport — one of the busiest in Washington State by operations — where sleek private planes and light aircraft touch down and take off against a backdrop of the Olympic Mountains on a clear day. On the other side, literally steps away, is a seaplane base where float-equipped aircraft taxi right up to the lake and lift off directly from the water. Watching that happen from the public viewing area along the perimeter is completely free, endlessly entertaining, and surprisingly meditative.

The airport has deep historical roots that give it a layer of meaning you won’t find at a typical airfield. Clayton Scott, for whom the field is named, was a pioneering aviator and flight instructor who helped shape Pacific Northwest aviation in the early twentieth century. Boeing itself has had a long relationship with this site — the company’s 737 MAX jets are still assembled nearby and rolled out to this very runway for their first test flights. On certain mornings, if the timing is right, you might witness one of the world’s most recognizable commercial aircraft taking its very first steps into the sky right in front of you. That is not a small thing.

Bring a camp chair, a thermos of coffee, and your camera. The viewing areas along the fence line offer unobstructed sightlines to the runway and the seaplane ramp. Families with kids who have even a passing interest in planes will find this place absolutely magnetic — there is something about the scale and the noise and the sheer mechanical drama of flight that makes even the most distracted child go wide-eyed and still.

After you have watched a few takeoffs and landings, wander south along the waterfront path toward the Renton Landing shopping area. The transition from aviation history to lakeside dining is seamless, and there are several spots nearby where you can grab a bite and watch the planes continue their circuits overhead. On summer evenings, the light on Lake Washington turns golden and the whole scene feels almost cinematic.

If you want to go beyond watching, several flight schools operate out of Renton Municipal and offer introductory discovery flights for remarkably reasonable prices — typically in the range of one hundred fifty to two hundred dollars. For that, you get a licensed instructor, a light aircraft, and roughly thirty minutes of hands-on flying over one of the most beautiful urban landscapes in the Pacific Northwest. Lake Washington, the Seattle skyline, Mount Rainier looming to the south — it is a perspective on this region that most people never get to experience.

Renton does not always get the credit it deserves as a destination city. People pass through on their way to Seattle or drive up to Bellevue without stopping. But this airport — sitting quietly at the water’s edge, humming with history and activity — is exactly the kind of place that rewards the curious traveler who takes the time to pull over and look twice. Come for the planes. Stay for the view. Leave with a story worth telling.
