Bluff Park United Methodist Youth Group Offers Faith‑Filled Safe Haven for Teens

In the heart of Hoover, Alabama, Bluff Park United Methodist Church has become a sanctuary for roughly 70 students ranging from sixth to twelfth grade. Every Sunday and Wednesday night, the church’s youth group meets to share worship, service projects and genuine friendship under the guidance of youth director Regan Sanders.

Leadership rooted in love

Regan Sanders, 27, began as an intern in 2022 and stepped into the youth director role later that year. “I had never done it before—overwhelming, to say the least—but I love those kids so much,” Sanders said. She praised the students’ character, noting they are “joyful, kind, genuine, thoughtful” and that she sees “the light” in each of them.

Sanders emphasizes that the group’s purpose is simple: to let each teen know they are loved by God and by one another. “They are worth the love at their best and their worst,” she said. “Wherever you go, that love goes with you.”

A pressure‑free atmosphere

Unlike many extracurricular activities that demand high performance, the youth group offers a space free from the pressures of social media, parental expectations and early success metrics. “Eleven‑ and twelve‑year‑olds already thinking about success—here there’s no pressure to perform like everywhere else,” Sanders explained.

Students echo this sentiment. Colin Keppley described the group as a place where “it’s not the smart people and the athletic people. It’s just people.” He added that the environment builds deeper connections than he experiences at school.

Declan Hennigan called the group “my family away from my house,” while London Edwards said it allows her to “let her guard down” amid the chaos of everyday life.

Faith in action

Pastor Ross Furio, senior pastor of Bluff Park United Methodist, highlighted the importance of the youth ministry in a community dominated by large high schools. “With the giant schools in the area, we provide something more intimate, where kids can be themselves—that’s the culture here and the kids love it,” he said.

Sanders is praised as the “heartbeat” of the ministry, aligning her calling with an existing culture of love and belonging. She has expanded the group’s reach, inviting more students to experience the supportive environment.

Signature events that build community

The youth group’s calendar includes a fall retreat, trips to Six Flags, mission trips such as Vacation Bible School and the Appalachia Service Project, and occasional beach outings. One standout tradition is Discovery Weekend, where high schoolers lead middle schoolers in service and worship.

During Discovery Weekend, a candlelight service allows students to write personal letters that are read aloud. “It made me feel loved,” London Edwards shared, noting it was one of the few times she has cried.

Sanders treasures these letters, describing them as “very powerful” and noting that the love poured into younger participants is later returned by the older students, creating a cycle of mentorship without a formal curriculum.

Impact on participants

Students who have attended larger churches remark on the intimacy of Bluff Park’s group. Lily Styes said, “This group is uplifting and you never leave worse. You always leave better, and everyone cheers for you.”

Senior students Matthew Pitts and Millie Burgess exemplify the group’s spirit by visiting a sixth‑grader’s birthday party in their homecoming attire, showing that love and celebration are passed down through generations.

“I don’t think they did that out of obligation,” Sanders reflected. “They did it because they genuinely loved that kid and wanted to celebrate them. This love makes this job worth it.”
