Blackhawks name 21‑year‑old Connor Bedard as team captain

Chicago – The Chicago Blackhawks officially appointed Connor Bedard as the franchise’s 37th captain on Tuesday. At 21 years and 60 days old, Bedard becomes the second‑youngest captain in the Original Six’s storied history, trailing only Jonathan Toews.

Leadership role amid rebuilding effort

Bedard, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft, said the honor is “incredible” and that he does not take it lightly. He credited veteran forward Nick Foligno, who was traded to Minnesota earlier this season, for mentoring him and helping him choose his attire for the press conference.

“My leadership style won’t be exactly the same as his, but seeing how he handled responsibilities has been valuable,” Bedford explained. “We have a lot of young guys in the room, and he’s had a big impact on me and many of our younger players.”

Contract and health update

Bedard signed a five‑year, $75 million extension in July, cementing his place as the cornerstone of Chicago’s rebuild. He is currently rehabbing from left‑shoulder surgery performed on July 8 and also missed 12 games after a right‑shoulder injury in December.

While the exact timeline for his return remains uncertain, Bedard said he is “working a bit more each day” and feels good about his progress. He hopes to be back on the ice as soon as possible.

On‑ice performance and future outlook

Since debuting at 18 in 2023, Bedard has lived up to the hype, earning the Calder Trophy as the league’s rookie of the year. In his third season he posted career highs with 30 goals and 45 assists over 69 games, demonstrating steady improvement.

General manager Kyle Davidson called Bedard “a natural‑born leader” who loves the game and the city. “He wants to be a leader of a group that brings winning back to Chicago, and we know he’ll continue to raise the bar for his teammates,” Davidson said.

Team context and roster moves

The Blackhawks finished the previous season 29‑39‑14, an 11‑point improvement yet still far from playoff contention. The franchise has ranked 31st in the NHL for three straight years.

In addition to Bedard’s promotion, Chicago added defenseman Bo Byram in a June trade with Buffalo and re‑signed veteran forward Patrick Kane to a two‑year, $16 million contract. Kane and forward Tyler Bertuzzi will serve as alternate captains, with Kane praising Bedard’s appointment as a “great decision” that brings “high vibes” to the locker room.

Looking ahead

Chicago aims to return to the postseason for the first time since the expanded playoff format was introduced in the pandemic‑affected 2019‑20 season. Bedard summed up the team’s mindset: “The city and fan base are used to winning, and we want to bring that back.”
