Black‑owned businesses spotlighted at CBCF Annual Legislative Conference in Washington

Washington, D.C. – During the 55th Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) Annual Legislative Conference held Sept. 16‑19 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Black‑owned businesses filled the exhibit hall with a vibrant marketplace. Vendors displayed a range of products, from jewelry to professional services, underscoring the foundation’s emphasis on cooperative economics and wealth‑building.

Entrepreneur spotlight

Setor Attipoe, founder of Salt & Pearl Jewelry, introduced five new collections aimed at the modern woman. “I’m supporting Black businesses, being supported by the wonderful crowd, and I am introducing my line… to the beautiful ladies and gentlemen of the Marketplace,” Attipoe told The Washington Informer. Her pieces blend classic pearl elegance with edgy, urban designs, allowing shoppers to try on and purchase items on the spot.

Attipoe, a first‑time vendor at the conference, said the event was critical for her growth. “[The ALC] is so important because of all of the heavyweight attendees that are coming. It’s where people discover new Black‑owned businesses, new brands, to network,” she explained.

CBCF’s mission and broader programming

CBCF President and CEO Nicole Austin‑Hillery highlighted the organization’s role in fueling economic empowerment. Speaking at the Phoenix Awards gala on Sept. 19, she said, “We supply the fuel for you to fight systemic injustice, to advance racial equity, to build economic prosperity, to honor the development of human potential in the Black community.”

The conference featured sessions on financial literacy, generational wealth, and a keynote from civil‑rights attorney Ben Crump, who urged attendees to keep their spending within the Black community: “Every day I’m going to count my Black dollars circulating in my Black community… If I need a lawyer, I’m going to find a Black lawyer… If I’m going to buy a house, I’m going to find a Black realtor.”

Impact on local entrepreneurs

For vendors like Attipoe, the ALC provided exposure to a national audience of policymakers, business leaders, and community members. “It has been a phenomenal show, and I will definitely be back,” she said, noting the event’s role in expanding her customer base and building community ties.

The CBCF’s focus on cooperative economics and supporting Black‑owned enterprises aligns with broader efforts to address economic disparities and promote self‑sufficiency within the Black community.
