A black bear has been spotted in Butler County, Alabama, near the Interstate 65 overpass southwest of Greenville. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources were called to the scene to attempt to catch the bear.
No injuries or destruction of property was reported. The sheriff’s office warns residents not to harm the bear and to keep their distance if it’s spotted again.
Butler County Sheriff David Scruggs reminds residents that harming a bear is a class A misdemeanor and could result in a $2,000 to $5,000 fine and up to one year in jail. Residents are advised to move to a safe location and report the bear to the sheriff’s office if spotted.
Black bears are not uncommon in Alabama, but there have been more sightings this year than usual. A map of the sightings is available, including locations in Talladega, Alexander City, Elmore County, Montgomery, and now Butler County.
