Bismarck, N.D. – As North Dakota State University begins its first season in the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Bison’s 18‑wheel companion is logging more miles than ever. Veteran driver Jedré Cyr, a former Bison fullback, has already logged 14,520 miles transporting the team this year, a figure that ranks fourth among all FBS programs.
Longer trips, new destinations
In past seasons the Bison’s road trips were limited to the Missouri Valley Football Conference, allowing Cyr to leave for games as late as Friday morning. This year the schedule stretches coast‑to‑coast, with trips to places like Sacramento, Las Vegas and Colorado Springs. “I think it’s one easy way for me to give back with what we do for a living,” Cyr said.
Family on board
Joining him in the cab is his 21‑year‑old brother, Jaeger Cyr. The siblings share the keys to the Bison’s big rig, giving Jedré the chance to take short naps between miles. “It’s pretty fun getting to be able to go with him, and we get to have a good time,” Jaeger said.
Coach connections
Current head coach Tim Polasek, who once coached Cyr as a tight end, praised the driver’s dedication. “Biggest heart in the world,” Polasek said, noting that Cyr’s servant‑leadership mirrors the team’s values on and off the field.
Upcoming road test
The next long haul will take the Bison to Albuquerque, New Mexico – a 1,264‑mile one‑way journey. Cyr expects to be back in time for Monday practice, underscoring the demanding schedule that comes with the Bison’s move to the FBS.
Why the miles matter
Traveling farther means more exposure for the program, new recruiting grounds and greater visibility for the university’s athletic brand. It also highlights the behind‑the‑scenes work of staff like Cyr, whose reliable logistics keep the team on schedule.
“I would love to do it until we just can’t do it anymore, I guess,” Cyr said, reflecting the pride he feels in supporting the Bison’s historic transition.
