Bishop Robert Barron, a leading Catholic figure in America, has called for an end to the demonization of the Trump administration by Catholics on the left, particularly concerning immigration and border security. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Barron emphasized the importance of dialogue over division, even on contentious issues.
Encouraging Dialogue
Barron noted that while the Catholic left often advocates for dialogue and bridge-building, this approach is sometimes abandoned when it comes to conservatives. He stressed the Church’s role in fostering conversations rather than demonizing political figures like former President Donald Trump.
Despite criticism of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, Barron argued that there are moral reasons to be concerned about open borders. He highlighted the need for discussions on immigration and other issues like the Iran conflict, although he admitted that success in these dialogues has been limited.
Concerns Over Border Security
Barron shared his experience on a recent White House call with border czar Tom Homan, who spoke passionately about the need for stricter border security to combat human trafficking, particularly of children. Homan, a Catholic, has come out of retirement twice to address these issues, citing the moral problems associated with open borders.
Barron found Homan’s commitment and personal impact moving, noting that Republicans seek to enforce immigration laws for moral reasons, not merely political gain. He acknowledged that there are values on both sides of the immigration debate and encouraged continued dialogue between the Vatican and Washington.
Bridging Differences
Barron suggested that leading Catholics within the Trump administration, such as JD Vance and Marco Rubio, should engage with their Vatican counterparts to have meaningful conversations grounded in the Church’s moral framework. He believes that such discussions could lead to more fruitful outcomes and better understanding between political and religious leaders.
By advocating for dialogue and understanding, Barron hopes to bridge the gap between differing viewpoints within the Catholic community and beyond, fostering a more constructive approach to addressing complex issues like immigration.
