Bingham Canyon Mine Overlook Puts the Scale of Human Ambition Right In Front of You

There are moments in travel when something is so unexpectedly enormous that your brain just quietly gives up trying to process it. That is exactly what happens the first time you stand at the observation deck above the Bingham Canyon Mine, just a short drive up into the Oquirrh Mountains from West Jordan, and look down into what is — without exaggeration — the largest man-made excavation on Earth.

The pit is roughly two and a half miles wide and three-quarters of a mile deep. It has been growing since 1906, and it is still actively producing copper, gold, silver, and molybdenum today. When you stare into it, the terraced walls spiral downward like something out of a science fiction film, and the haul trucks moving far below look like toy cars until a guide reminds you that each one of those trucks stands taller than a two-story house. That is the moment it all clicks into dizzying perspective.

Getting there is part of the experience. You drive west out of West Jordan on 9000 South and wind up into the foothills, passing through the old mining town of Copperton before arriving at the Kennecott Visitor Center. The center itself is worth your time — there are well-organized exhibits covering the geology of the region, the history of the Ute and Shoshone peoples who knew these mountains long before any pick ever struck the ground, and the industrial story of how this single mine helped wire half of the modern world. Copper from Bingham Canyon lit up American cities, powered wartime factories, and connected continents through telephone cables. Standing there reading those panels, you start to feel the weight of that history in a genuine way.

The overlook is open seasonally, typically from mid-April through October, and the admission fee is modest — well worth it for what you get. On a clear morning, the light hits the terraced copper walls in warm amber tones and the views stretch across the Salt Lake Valley all the way to the Wasatch Range on the other side. Bring a jacket even in summer; the elevation keeps things cooler than you expect, and the breeze off the mountains is steady.

Families with curious kids will find this place endlessly engaging. There is something fundamentally compelling about scale, and children who might glaze over in a traditional museum will stand at that railing wide-eyed and full of questions. Plan for at least two hours if you want to do the visitor center and the overlook properly, and bring snacks because there is not much food service on site.

West Jordan does not always get credit for being a gateway to experiences this dramatic, and that is a shame. The Bingham Canyon Mine Overlook is one of those rare places that genuinely earns the word extraordinary, and it is sitting right here in the foothills above the city, ready to stop you in your tracks.
