With the 2026 FIFA World Cup underway, comedian and liberal talk show host Bill Maher dedicated a segment on his show “Real Time” to the people who made this tournament memorable off the pitch.
Appreciation for America
Maher praised foreign visitors for reminding Americans of the country’s greatness. “I am loving that the World Cup has brought to our shores all of these people that are doing Americans the service of reminding us, just when we needed it, on our big (250th) birthday, that actually, this place is kind of awesome,” Maher said.
Maher also reminded everyone that, while there are problems that need to be addressed in this country, no one is perfect. “The name of our country is ‘America,’ not ‘Utopia,'” Maher remarked.
He noted that social media is flooded with videos of tourists positively gushing about everything Americans take for granted, reminding us what America looks like from the outside. “Just regular people looking around and saying, ‘Wow! These people live like rock stars,'” Maher said.
