Big rig crashes on I‑80 near Floriston, closing eastbound traffic for hours

On Friday morning, around 10:45 a.m., a large commercial truck lost control on the I‑80 bridge near the small community of Floriston in Nevada County, California. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver’s cab slipped over the edge of the bridge, causing the vehicle to dangle precariously over the canyon below.

Immediate response and road closure

CHP officers quickly secured the scene and closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 to protect motorists and to allow emergency crews to work safely. The closure lasted several hours, causing delays for commuters and freight traffic traveling between Sacramento and Reno. Detour signs directed drivers to alternate routes, including State Route 89 and local county roads, while the highway remained shut for the duration of the rescue operation.

Driver injuries and rescue efforts

When the cab fell, the driver was ejected from the vehicle and struck the embankment below. First responders reported that the driver sustained major injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The CHP confirmed that the driver’s condition was serious but did not release further medical details pending family notification.

Investigation underway

CHP investigators are examining the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that the driver may have lost control due to a sudden mechanical failure or a hazardous road condition, but the agency has not ruled out any possibilities. Officials plan to review bridge safety records and vehicle maintenance logs as part of the ongoing investigation.

Impact on the community

Floriston is a small, rural community that relies on I‑80 as a vital transportation corridor for both local residents and commercial traffic. The temporary shutdown highlighted the importance of maintaining safe infrastructure on heavily used interstate routes. Local businesses reported a brief dip in customer traffic as drivers sought alternative paths, but most expressed confidence that the highway would reopen promptly.

What drivers should know

Motorists traveling through Nevada County are urged to stay alert for traffic updates on local radio stations and the CHP’s website. The agency advises drivers to maintain a safe following distance, especially on bridges and steep grades, and to report any suspicious vehicle behavior to authorities immediately.

The eastbound lanes of I‑80 were reopened after the rescue and cleanup were completed, allowing traffic to resume its normal flow. CHP officials thanked the public for their patience and cooperation during the incident.
