Exploring Moral Absolutes
The track ‘Questions’ interrogates the idea of moral absolutes, with singer and guitarist Nate Wilder singing ‘And still I have to wonder/Why do fish swim that way?’ and ‘And what are good intentions/And which one leads the way?’
Wilder explained that the song is about the idea that there is no moral rule in the end of things, and that people often find ways to justify their actions. He said, ‘I mean, these are just ancient questions, and a lot of the album is dealing with the skepticism that keeps getting brought on by everything.’
Recording the Album
The album was recorded at the Lodge, a repurposed Masonic Temple in Dayton, Kentucky. The band took a ‘building block approach’ to recording, with each member adding their own parts to the songs. Wilder described the process as ‘pretty improvisational at moments, but it also felt very structured.’
The band’s singer and bassist, Olivia Stefanoff, said that the album is about bridging the gap between different ideas and themes. She explained, ‘We can do it all if we want to.’ The album features a range of sounds, from the punkish ‘Olivia’s Song’ to the lush, dreamlike ‘Never Seen My Homeland’.
