Newly released audio recordings of former President Joe Biden’s conversations with his ghostwriter, Mark Lewis Zwonitzer, have been made public by the Oversight Project, a branch of the conservative think-tank Heritage Foundation. The recordings appear to support the findings of former Special Counsel Robert Hur’s 2024 report, which stated that Biden disclosed classified material and was forgetful.
Classified Material Discussions
In the audio tapes, Biden can be heard discussing classified foreign policy matters from his time as vice president. The information is still redacted in the audio clips. Biden also mentions that he had “just found” classified documents and proceeds to lay out his case for why he argued against deploying additional troops to Afghanistan in 2009.
Biden’s conversations with his ghostwriter also reveal his poor memory, with the former president having trouble remembering dates and information. This is consistent with Hur’s report, which described Biden as an elderly man with a poor memory.
Reaction to the Release
A representative for Biden declined to comment on the release of the audio clips. The Oversight Project released a statement saying that they had fought to bring the tapes to light and that they should have been released a long time ago.
