Newly released audio recordings of former President Joe Biden have raised concerns about his handling of classified information and his struggles with memory. The recordings, which were released by the Oversight Project, a branch of the conservative think-tank Heritage Foundation, appear to show Biden discussing classified material with his biographer, Mark Lewis Zwonitzer.

In the recordings, Biden can be heard discussing notes he kept from his time as vice president, which apparently contained classified information. Biden told Zwonitzer that he had “just found” the classified documents and proceeded to discuss them in detail. The context of the discussion was unclear, but it appears that Biden was discussing his opposition to sending troops to Afghanistan in 2009.

Biden also discussed his struggles with memory, which were noted in a 2024 report by former Special Counsel Robert Hur. The report described Biden as an elderly man with a poor memory, which was a factor in his decision not to bring a case against Biden for mishandling classified information.

Response

A representative for Biden declined to comment on the release of the audio recordings. The Oversight Project released a statement saying that they had fought to bring the recordings to light and that they should have been released a long time ago.
