Beverly Home Hosts Unlicensed Concerts

A home in the 10500 block of South Maplewood Avenue in Beverly has been the site of multiple unlicensed concerts and events, prompting visits from police and city business officials. The homeowner, Chanay Walton, has denied operating an entertainment business from her home, but city officials have issued multiple citations for operating without the required licenses.

Concerns from Neighbors and City Officials

Ald. Matt O’Shea (19th) said his office has received over 50 complaints regarding the property and its events. O’Shea, who lives on the block, said the homeowner is using the property as an event space for rent, which is not allowed in a residential area. The latest outdoor event, held on Saturday, featured a live band and armed security, and resulted in nine citations being issued by city officials.

Walton said she started hosting gatherings at her home last year and had previously listed her residence on an online marketplace for hourly venue rentals. However, after being issued cease and desist letters in May, Walton said she stopped renting out her space and has since only hosted private parties. The latest party, billed as Chanay’s Juke Joint: Love Hangover, had a listing on an online event ticketing platform, but Walton said tickets were free and used only to track RSVPs.

City Officials Crack Down on Unlicensed Events

City officials have been cracking down on unlicensed events in the area, and Walton’s home has been a focal point of these efforts. The city’s Business Affairs and Consumer Protection department has issued multiple citations to Walton for operating without the required licenses, including a public place of amusement license. Walton said she has tried to work with city officials to obtain the necessary licenses, but has been unsuccessful.

The issue has sparked concerns among neighbors, who are worried about the noise, parking, and safety implications of the unlicensed events. Some neighbors have also expressed concerns about the type of crowd that the events are attracting, with some comments on social media having racial undertones. O’Shea said he will continue to work with city agencies to address the residence, but is asking neighbors to not fan the flames on social media.
