Beslan School Siege: Timeline and Aftermath of the 2004 Tragedy

On the first day of classes in Beslan, North Ossetia, Russia, armed Chechen rebels stormed School No. 1 on September 1, 2004. Approximately 1,200 children and adults were taken hostage as the militants entered the building around 9 a.m. local time.

Key moments of the siege

September 1 – The rebels seized the school and began fortifying the gymnasium with explosives and suicide belts. By 4:40 p.m., twelve children and one adult managed to escape by hiding in a boiler room. Contact with the hostage‑takers was established at 7:30 p.m.

September 2 – President Vladimir Putin cancelled a planned trip to Turkey and issued a public statement condemning the attack. At 4:45 p.m., Russian authorities secured the release of roughly 26 hostages. Later that evening, local officials reported that about 20 male hostages were executed by the militants.

September 3 – At 1 p.m., Russian officials received permission from the hostage‑takers to move bodies that had accumulated in front of the school. Shortly thereafter, loud explosions were heard, and gunfire erupted as hostages attempted to flee. The roof of the gymnasium collapsed, killing many who were still inside. Russian special forces entered the building at 2:30 p.m., freeing numerous survivors. By 3:17 p.m., the remaining hostages were evacuated, and the siege officially ended.

Casualties and immediate impact

The siege resulted in more than 330 deaths, half of them children, and left over 700 people wounded. Reports indicate that 31 of the 32 hostage‑takers were killed during the operation; two of the militants were believed to be women. The attackers had strapped bombs to the basketball hoops in the gym and wore suicide belts, heightening the danger for those inside.

Legal proceedings and investigations

Only one of the militants, Nur‑Pashi Kulayev, survived to face trial. His case began on May 18, 2005. In May 2006, Kulayev was convicted of terrorism and related charges and received a life sentence.

A Russian parliamentary commission released a report on December 22, 2006, attributing the high death toll primarily to Chechen guerrillas and exonerating Russian security forces. Some families criticized the report as a cover‑up.

International response and reparations

On April 4, 2017, the European Court of Human Rights ordered Russia to pay nearly €3 million to the victims’ families, citing serious failings by Russian authorities in responding to the attack despite having specific intelligence about a planned assault on an educational institution. Russia announced it would comply with the ruling on September 19, 2017.

Memorials and remembrance

Each year, families and survivors gather to remember the tragedy. More than 2,500 people assembled outside the school on September 1, 2009, for the fifth‑anniversary memorial service.

The Beslan school siege remains a stark reminder of the human cost of terrorism and the importance of protecting schools and children. Ongoing legal actions and international judgments continue to shape the narrative of accountability and remembrance for this devastating event.
