Bernalillo Public Schools is reviewing the effectiveness of its safety measures as summer break begins, following the first full school year of its clear backpack policy. The district implemented the clear backpack policy alongside upgraded cameras and other security measures, which Superintendent Matt Montano said made students and parents feel safer.
Safety Measures
The district has also expanded campus monitoring with upgraded cameras, fencing, controlled access points, and repeated safety drills for students and staff. Montano said the district is also testing weapon detection systems and prioritizing communication through text, email, and social media, while continuing to emphasize training as one of its most important safety tools.
Montano said vaping was the primary issue throughout the school year, but the district remains prepared for other challenges. The district has made its bullying reporting system easier to access online and is exploring cybersecurity measures, particularly as artificial intelligence continues to grow.
The district has armed security on all but two of its campuses. Montano stated, ‘This is a continuous improvement process, as I’ve learned over the last many, many years, people have talked about safety. And even when you gain expertise, you always have to be ready for the next thing,’
