Benton County leaders took two major steps related to the county jail, unanimously approving a federal grant application and creating a dedicated fund for a proposed misdemeanor jail expansion.
Grant Application
The Benton County Quorum Court approved a resolution authorizing County Judge Barry Moehring to apply for a $60,000 federal grant through the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP). The U.S. Department of Justice program reimburses local governments for some of the costs of housing certain illegal immigrants who meet federal eligibility requirements.
Justice of the Peace Brian Armas said the funding helps offset costs the county has already incurred. “It basically accounts for some of the days that they are there as ICE detainees,” Armas said.
Jail Expansion Fund
The Quorum Court also approved an ordinance creating a dedicated operations fund for a misdemeanor jail expansion. The ordinance establishes a fund that will set aside money to help pay future operating costs if the project moves forward.
County leaders have discussed building a new misdemeanor housing pod that could add nearly 300 beds to the Benton County Jail. Supporters of the proposal said the county’s continued growth has increased the need for misdemeanor jail space.
