Bend-La Pine Education Foundation Expands Scholarship for Resilient Students

The Bend-La Pine Education Foundation in Bend, Oregon, has announced the expansion of its Axel F. Hoch Legacy Scholarship program. This initiative, which now supports 32 students for the 2026–27 school year, is designed to assist students who have demonstrated remarkable perseverance in the face of adversity. The scholarship is unique in its focus on resilience rather than academic metrics, offering support to those who have faced challenges such as poverty, homelessness, family hardships, and health struggles.

Supporting Resilient Students

Jamie Goldman, the executive director of the Bend-La Pine Education Foundation, emphasized the program’s distinctive approach. ‘Success looks different for every student,’ Goldman stated. ‘The students in this program have already overcome challenges that many adults never face. They have shown remarkable resilience and determination, and we are honored to stand beside them as they continue their educational journeys and redefine what success can look like.’

The scholarship provides more than just financial assistance. It includes ongoing support aimed at removing barriers and helping students thrive. Each recipient is paired with a mentor to guide them through their college or career journey, ensuring they have the resources and support needed to succeed.

Beyond Financial Aid

Cheri Helt, a representative of the Bend-La Pine Education Foundation, highlighted the broader purpose of the initiative. ‘This program is about more than helping students get to college or training programs,’ Helt explained. ‘It is about helping students believe that their story, their hard work, and their future matter.’ The scholarship recipients are pursuing a variety of fields, including healthcare, education, skilled trades, engineering, and business, reflecting the diverse aspirations of the students involved.
