Bend Humane Society invites families to annual pet adoption open house Aug. 29

The Humane Society of Central Oregon, a longtime partner of KTVZ, is opening its doors for the community on Aug. 29. The annual open house gives Bend families an opportunity to meet a variety of adoptable animals, from dogs and cats to rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles and birds.

Event details and activities

Executive Director Amber Kostoff said the shelter will feature a “wheel of adoption discounts” where visitors can spin for reduced adoption fees. In addition to meeting the animals, attendees can enjoy family‑friendly activities and learn more about the shelter’s programs.

For those who cannot attend in person, the shelter’s weekly “Pet Pals” segment will showcase adoptable pets during KTVZ’s 5 p.m. newscast on Fridays.

Why the open house matters

Summer is traditionally a busy season for the shelter, with a surge in stray animals arriving. Staff report that more than 80 % of lost pets brought to the shelter are reunited with their families, underscoring the importance of community involvement.

Beyond adoption, the Humane Society welcomes volunteers and donors. Information on how to help can be found on the shelter’s website.

About the Humane Society of Central Oregon

Serving Bend and the surrounding area for over 60 years, the Humane Society of Central Oregon cares for a wide range of animals. The organization relies on local support to provide medical care, shelter and education to both pets and owners.

Residents are encouraged to stop by the open house, consider adopting a new family member, or support the shelter in other ways. The event reflects Bend’s strong tradition of caring for neighbors—both human and animal.
