The European Union has deployed three helicopters and two water bomber aircraft to help Belgium combat a massive wildfire in the High Fens, the country’s largest nature reserve. The fire, which started on Friday, has already burned 1,600 hectares of land, making it the biggest on record in Belgium.

The EU’s crisis commissioner, Hadja Lahbib, announced the deployment of the aircraft, which came from the Czech Republic, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Local firefighters, farmers, and the army are also working to contain the blaze.
Scientists have confirmed that human-caused climate change is increasing the likelihood of wildfires, and European countries, including Belgium, have been experiencing a heatwave this week, fueling the hot and dry conditions that support wildfires.
