A brown bear was captured in a neighborhood near Jane Circle SE and Golf Course Road SE in Rio Rancho on Sunday. Anna Moya, a resident of the neighborhood, had a close encounter with the bear while she was outside with her two little dogs.
Moya’s dog, Tilly, attacked the bear, which then came after her. Moya was able to grab her dog and bring her inside to safety. The bear ran up a tree in Moya’s backyard, where it was later tranquilized and removed by the New Mexico Department of Wildlife and Rio Rancho police officers.
The New Mexico Department of Wildlife reminds homeowners to keep their neighborhoods safe by removing food and water sources from their yards and surrounding areas. This is especially important during the summer months when bear sightings are on the rise in New Mexico.
