Bear Attacks in Japan Highlight Rising Wildlife Encroachment

A bear attack in the Sasakino district of Fukushima, Japan, left four people injured on Tuesday, underscoring a growing issue of wildlife encroachment in the region. The incident involved two employees of the Fukushima Steel Works and two local residents, with injuries ranging from minor to moderate, though none were life-threatening.

Rising Bear Attacks

This attack is part of a troubling trend in Japan, where bear encounters have become increasingly common. In 2025, a record 13 people were killed in over 230 bear attacks across the country. The Japanese government has been urged to take action as the bear population continues to grow, posing a threat to the aging and declining human population in rural areas.

The bear responsible for the recent attacks had not been captured as of Tuesday afternoon. Authorities have surrounded the area, and local schools, including Noda Elementary School, have closed as a precaution, moving classes online and advising residents to stay indoors.

Government Response

In response to the rising number of bear attacks, the Japanese government has developed a comprehensive plan to manage the bear population. This includes tripling the number of municipal bear control staff to 2,500 and doubling the number of bear traps within five years. Public awareness campaigns have also been intensified, urging citizens to stay informed about bear sightings and to avoid outdoor activities during peak bear activity times.

Experts attribute the increase in bear encounters to the growing bear population and the lack of trained hunters in regions with declining human populations. The government estimates the bear population at around 57,800 and has called for systematic culling to manage the numbers effectively.

Recent bear sightings in Tokyo’s western suburbs have prompted park officials to set up additional traps and issue alerts on social media. The Environment Ministry has also provided guidelines for safely encountering bears, emphasizing the importance of not panicking and using specific defensive measures if attacked.
