A male jogger was attacked by a bear while running with his dog in Henrys Lake State Park, Idaho, on July 24. The man sustained injuries but was able to walk back to safety on his own. His dog was uninjured.
Bear Safety Tips
Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG) provided tips for staying safe in bear country, including keeping a safe distance from wildlife, staying alert, and making noise while traveling. The park’s trail system was closed following the attack and is expected to remain closed through July 31.
IDFG partnered with Fremont County deputies to secure the scene and investigate the incident. The site where the attack occurred was discovered, but no bears were found in the area. Due to the surprise nature of the attack and no sign of bears in the area, no further actions are being taken at this time.
IDFG advised learning about bear safety on the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee website and reminded visitors that the entirety of Island Park is bear country, where bears can be anywhere. Visitors are advised to assume their presence and always be bear aware.
