Bastrop County commissioners have taken steps to enhance road safety by approving a no-through truck ordinance for specific sections of Kaanapali Lane and Blue Flame Road. This decision follows recommendations from the county’s engineering staff, aiming to address safety concerns and improve traffic flow.
The new ordinance restricts large trucks from using Kaanapali Lane between McAllister Road and Tahitian Drive, as well as Blue Flame Road from FM 1209 to SH 71. County engineer Sun highlighted the safety issues on Blue Flame Road, particularly during peak traffic hours, due to congestion and the road’s narrow width. The presence of a sharp 90-degree blind curve further exacerbates these concerns, as large trucks have wide turning radii that can create hazardous conditions.
Traffic Control Updates
In addition to the truck ordinance, the commissioners have also approved the installation of four-way stops at several intersections to improve traffic safety. These include the intersections of Panorama Bay Avenue with Alonzo Drive, and Pepper Parkway with Lucky Avenue. Sun noted that the intersection at Pepper Parkway and Lucky Avenue experiences higher traffic volumes due to subdivision connectivity, and visibility is often obstructed by fence lines and parked vehicles.
While the commissioners considered adding a four-way stop at Pony Express Drive and Campfire Way, they opted instead to adjust existing signage and add intersection-ahead warning signs. The county will continue to monitor traffic flow at this location to determine if further measures are necessary.
