Barber-Scotia College, a historical Black college in Concord, North Carolina, is working towards regaining its accreditation. The college, which was the first private Southern institution to educate Black women, lost its accreditation in 2004 due to financial challenges.
Re-accreditation Efforts
Despite the challenges, the college’s president, Chris Rey, is optimistic about the future. He stated that fundraising efforts have helped the college pay off most of its debt, and they are now on track to submit an application for re-accreditation within the next 30 days.
Curtis Newsome, a former groundskeeper at the college, believes that the college’s re-accreditation would have a positive impact on the city. He said, ‘Even though it would help the city itself to have this school come back alive, it means more income for the city.’
