The Barbara Bush Branch Library, one of 29 locations in the Harris County Public Library system, is gearing up for a special celebration of its 50th anniversary. The nonprofit Barbara Bush Library Friends (BBLF) has organized a full week of family‑friendly activities from Oct. 19 to Oct. 23, giving residents plenty of chances to honor the library’s legacy.
Hands‑on workshops kick off the week
Events begin at 1 p.m. on Oct. 19 with a kintsugi workshop, where participants learn the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. The creative spirit continues on Oct. 21 with two DIY sessions: a gold‑leaf pumpkin craft at 2 p.m. and a diamond‑art project at 3 p.m., both designed for all ages.
Birthday celebration and live music
On Oct. 22, the library will host its birthday party from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Attendees can explore historical displays, enjoy refreshments, and enter door‑prize drawings. The evening will also feature information on upcoming library projects and a musical performance by DACAMERA, an internationally recognized chamber‑music and jazz ensemble.
Documentary screening on book bans
The week concludes with a screening of The Librarians, a documentary that examines how book bans affect Texas communities. The film will be shown upstairs from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 22; children must be accompanied by an adult.
Kids’ programming throughout the week
BBLF has added several child‑focused events, including a birthday‑themed PJ storytime and other activities designed to spark a love of reading. All events are free, but families should RSVP by Oct. 5 to secure a spot.
