Bank of Japan may need rapid rate hikes if inflation spikes, says board member

Fukui, Japan – In a speech to policymakers on Thursday, Bank of Japan (BOJ) board member Kazuyuki Masu cautioned that a sharp rise in producer prices could compel the central bank to lift interest rates at a faster pace than previously expected.

Rising costs could spark broader price pressure

Masu highlighted a recent spike in producer‑price data, noting that companies are already passing higher costs onto consumers. He pointed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the persistent weakness of the yen as key drivers of higher input prices for Japanese firms.

Specifically, Masu warned that rising fuel and chemical costs linked to the war in Iran could increase transportation expenses, while higher food prices may create a lasting upward pressure on overall consumer prices.

Accommodative conditions and the risk of rapid hikes

“Financial conditions in Japan remain accommodative. If inflation accelerates here, there is a risk we might inevitably need to rapidly raise interest rates,” Masu said.

He added that underlying inflation has not yet reached the BOJ’s 2 % target, but is “quite close.” Masu argued that the policy rate should be raised further because it now sits solidly within the estimated range of the neutral interest rate, giving the BOJ flexibility to adjust policy up or down as economic conditions evolve.

Market expectations and upcoming policy moves

A Reuters poll cited in the report projects that the BOJ could increase its policy rate to 1.25 % on September 18, with a further hike to 1.75 % in the second quarter of 2027—earlier than many analysts had anticipated. The poll reflects ongoing concerns about broadening price pressures and the yen’s weakness.

Masu’s remarks come as the BOJ balances the need to support economic growth with the imperative to keep inflation anchored at its 2 % goal. The central bank’s next policy decision, scheduled for September 18, will be closely watched for any signs of a shift toward a tighter monetary stance.

Implications for businesses and households

If the BOJ does move to raise rates more quickly, borrowing costs for businesses and households could rise, affecting everything from corporate investment plans to mortgage payments. However, Masu emphasized that a higher neutral rate would also give the bank room to cut rates if future data warrant a more accommodative approach.

Stakeholders across Japan’s economy will be monitoring the upcoming policy meeting, as the central bank’s actions will shape the trajectory of inflation, the yen’s value, and overall economic stability in the months ahead.
