Baltimore City’s health commissioner has declared a Code Red Extreme Heat Alert for Wednesday and Thursday, as temperatures are expected to climb again across the region. The heat index is forecasted to surpass 105 degrees Fahrenheit on both days.
Heat-Related Illness Risks
According to the health commissioner, extreme heat is a dangerous weather-related hazard that threatens the life or health of Baltimore residents. The risk of experiencing heat exhaustion or heat stroke is higher during extreme heat events, with symptoms including confusion, nausea, lightheadedness, and high body temperature.
City officials are urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves and others from heat-related illness, such as staying hydrated, seeking shelter in air-conditioned spaces, limiting time spent outdoors, and checking on vulnerable community members.
Baltimore is activating cooling centers at locations across the city, and residents can also visit Enoch Pratt Free Library locations for relief from the heat.
