Albuquerque, N.M. – This week the Balloon Discovery Center turned 25, celebrating a quarter‑century of interactive ballooning education at the world‑renowned Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Housed in a large white tent on the north side of Balloon Fiesta Park, the center now occupies an 80‑by‑110‑foot structure, 20 feet larger than last year, to accommodate the growing crowds.
New and Updated Exhibits Invite All Ages
The expanded tent features 12 to 13 hands‑on stations designed to teach visitors the science and art of ballooning. Highlights include a virtual‑reality balloon ride that lets guests experience a launch from a pilot’s perspective, a life‑size hot‑air balloon you can step inside for photos, and a wicker‑weaving station where participants learn how balloon baskets are constructed.
One of the newest attractions, the “Wind Factor” exhibit, lets visitors feel wind speeds of 1, 5, 10 and 15 mph while learning how wind influences balloon launches. Organizers explained that too‑strong winds can keep balloons grounded, while a lack of wind can cause balloons to hover and delay subsequent launch waves.
Understanding the Albuquerque Box
Another interactive station focuses on the “Albuquerque Box,” a local weather pattern in which winds shift direction at different altitudes. Guests use a digital simulation to apply those wind layers and attempt to land a virtual balloon on a target, reinforcing the importance of meteorology for safe ballooning.
Passport Program Encourages Young Explorers
Children twelve and younger can receive a special passport. After visiting at least seven exhibits, they earn a prize, turning the day into a rewarding scavenger hunt. The center also serves as an indoor alternative when weather conditions make outdoor ballooning unsafe.
Mission Focused on the Next Generation
“The mission for this tent is inspiring the love of ballooning for the next generation,” said Tracey Hawkins, community and education outreach manager. “We want to inspire people to say, ‘Hey, you could do this.’ You could go out and get your pilot license. You could become a private pilot or a commercial pilot, and that’s good for Balloon Fiesta.”
More than 35,000 visitors explore the Balloon Discovery Center each year, and admission is included with a Balloon Fiesta ticket, making it an accessible family activity during the festival.
Looking Ahead
With its expanded space and fresh exhibits, the center aims to continue drawing curious minds and future aviators for years to come. As the Balloon Fiesta grows, the Discovery Center remains a cornerstone of the event’s educational outreach, reinforcing Albuquerque’s reputation as a hub for ballooning enthusiasts and families alike.
