Bald eagle Jackie, known for appearing on Big Bear Valley’s Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, is receiving treatment after an altercation with two eagles visiting the area. Her family, including her partner Shadow and children Sandy and Luna, are protecting the nest.
Jackie’s Condition
According to the Ojai Raptor Center, Jackie is in critical condition and is experiencing severe anemia and inflammation affecting the kidneys. She is also underweight. The center is waiting for test results and is working to determine the cause of her symptoms.
Despite the severity of her case, Jackie remains alert and is eating. Her partner, Shadow, and children, Sandy and Luna, are taking care of the nest in her absence.
Family’s Role
Luna, Jackie’s son, has been seen chasing away eagles from the nest, while Shadow has been protecting the nest from subadult eagles in the area. Shadow has also been feeding and protecting Luna and Sandy.
Bald eagles are known to mate for life, and it is unlikely that Shadow will look for a new mate until his hormones begin to kick in, which usually happens around the end of December or the beginning of January.
