Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, Zimbabwe Join UN Security Council

The United Nations General Assembly has elected Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe to the 15-member U.N. Security Council. These countries will begin their two-year terms on January 1, 2027. The election took place on Wednesday, with a third round of voting still needed to decide between the Philippines and Kyrgyzstan for the fifth available seat.

Security Council Dynamics

The Security Council is the only U.N. body with the authority to make legally binding decisions, such as imposing sanctions and authorizing the use of force. It consists of five permanent members with veto power: Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States. The remaining ten members are elected, with five new members joining each year. This year, the elected members come from different regional groups: one from the Africa Group, one from the Latin American and Caribbean Group, one from the Asia-Pacific Group, and two from the Western European and Others Group.

In this election, Zimbabwe will replace Somalia, Trinidad and Tobago will replace Panama, while Portugal and Austria will take over from Denmark and Greece. The Philippines and Kyrgyzstan are vying to replace Pakistan.

Voting Outcomes

Germany, which had campaigned vigorously for a seat, came third in the competition for the two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group. Portugal received 134 votes, Austria 131, and Germany 104.
