Auburn dominates Southern Miss 43-8 in home opener, Brown shines

In front of a lively Auburn crowd, the Tigers opened their home schedule with a decisive 43-8 win over Southern Miss on Saturday night. Freshman quarterback Byrum Brown delivered a polished performance, completing 17 of 28 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding 88 rushing yards on 13 carries and a five‑yard receiving score.

Brown’s efficient debut

After a rough first start that saw three interceptions, Brown rebounded with poise, avoiding turnovers entirely and moving the chains both through the air and on the ground. Coach Alex Golesh highlighted the quarterback’s confidence, saying, “He was efficient… I thought he managed it well. He moved the chains with his feet.” The Tigers’ offense racked up 613 total yards, splitting the output between 270 passing yards and 343 rushing yards.

Supporting cast contributes

Running back Omar Mabson II added 108 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while receiver Chas Nimrod recorded seven catches for 52 yards. The Tigers’ defense set the tone early with a pick‑six by Brown, returning an interception 29 yards for a touchdown on the second snap of the game.

Defensive dominance

Southern Miss struggled to gain traction, forced into a safety and a turnover on downs, and held scoreless for the final two quarters. Their quarterback, Ethan Hampton, completed 18 of 27 passes for 146 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions before being replaced by Landry Lyddy in the fourth quarter.

Looking ahead

Golesh praised the overall effort but warned that penalties and a third‑quarter fumble near the goal line could become costly in a longer season. “I was so disappointed in the sloppiness,” he said. “If the standard is that, then we’re going to have a really, really long season. We have to have a sense of urgency on cleaning this up.”

The Tigers now turn their attention to the SEC opener against Florida next Saturday, hoping to carry the confidence from this dominant performance into conference play.
