Attorney says Patrick Clancy targeted by defamation campaign after mistrial

Attorneys for Patrick Clancy, the former husband of Lindsay Clancy, issued a statement Tuesday demanding an end to what they describe as a “relentless, escalating and destructive defamation campaign.” The statement came shortly after a jury declared a mistrial in the murder case involving the deaths of the couple’s three children.

Lawyers allege misinformation spread by influencers

Howard Cooper of Todd & Weld, the firm representing Mr. Clancy, said the campaign has been driven by minor celebrities, so‑called influencers and conspiracy theorists seeking to boost their social‑media profiles and profit from false claims that Mr. Clancy was involved in the children’s deaths.

Cooper warned that the misinformation threatens Mr. Clancy’s “reputation, livelihood, and life,” and that legal action will be pursued against those responsible. “Law enforcement has been notified,” he added.

Mistrial leaves case unresolved

The trial, which began on July 20, focused on whether Patrick Clancy, 36, bore criminal responsibility for the 2023 killings of his three children—5‑year‑old Cora, 3‑year‑old Dawson, and 8‑month‑old Callan. Jurors deliberated for seven days but remained deadlocked, prompting the judge to declare a mistrial.

Jurors were asked to consider first‑degree murder, second‑degree murder, manslaughter, not guilty, or not guilty by lack of criminal responsibility. A holdout juror prevented a unanimous verdict, and a hearing on next steps is scheduled for Sept. 29.

Background of the case

Lindsay Clancy, also 36, faces three murder charges for the deaths of the children and is currently held at Tewksbury State Hospital after she jumped from a second‑floor window, leaving her partially paralyzed. In a separate civil suit, she alleges a “catastrophic failure” by multiple medical providers to diagnose and treat her psychiatric condition.

Although her defense team offered to stipulate to the children’s deaths, Ms. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges.

Family’s response

Mr. Clancy’s attorneys said he is grateful to the court and jurors for their hard work and perseverance. They emphasized that the loss of his children is a wound that will never fully heal and that the prospect of another trial is “extraordinarily painful” for the family.

Cooper said Mr. Clancy’s primary goal is to protect the memory of Cora, Dawson, and Callan while supporting other women facing perinatal mental‑health challenges.

The case raises broader concerns about mental‑health support and the impact of online misinformation on grieving families. If you or someone you know needs help, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available by calling or texting 988, or you can chat online at the Lifeline website.
