Attorney General Paxton Unveils $50K Homebuyer Tax Deduction at Fort Worth Rally

At the T&P Station Wedding & Event Venue in Fort Worth on Monday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) – the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate – presented his “Protecting the Texas Promise” tax‑relief blueprint to a crowd of early‑voting supporters. The gathering coincided with the opening of early voting for the November 3 midterm election, giving Paxton a chance to link his policy proposals directly to families’ everyday financial concerns.

Key components of the proposal

Paxton’s plan centers on three major deductions aimed at easing the cost of living for Texas households:

  • $25,000 deduction for out‑of‑pocket medical expenses, including health‑insurance premiums.
  • $25,000 deduction for each dependent, intended to provide additional relief for larger families.
  • $50,000 deduction for first‑time homebuyers and a second $50,000 deduction for those purchasing a new primary residence.

All of these deductions would reduce taxable income rather than provide direct cash checks. The actual savings a family sees will depend on eligibility, qualifying expenses, and the taxpayer’s marginal tax rate.

Additional family‑focused measures

Beyond the homebuyer and medical deductions, Paxton called for a $5,000 deduction for “healthy‑living” expenses such as gym memberships, nutrition programs, youth sports activities, and GLP‑1 medications. He also advocated doubling the child tax credit from the current $2,200 to $4,400 per qualifying child, arguing that parents know best how to allocate their money.

Another element of the agenda is to make permanent the federal “Trump Accounts” pilot, which currently offers a one‑time $1,000 seed contribution for eligible U.S. citizen children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028.

Political context and next steps

The tax changes would require congressional approval before they could take effect, meaning the plan’s fate rests on the composition of the 118th Congress and the willingness of Senate leaders to act on a bipartisan basis. Paxton’s proposal has already been featured in Senate‑race advertising, underscoring its role as a campaign centerpiece.

At the rally, Republican Texas House candidates Cheryl Bean (District 94) and Ellen Fleischmann (District 96) joined Paxton onstage. Bean urged volunteers to reach out to voters, noting the unusually high turnout at polling sites. Fleischmann highlighted the influx of newcomers from states like California, describing them as “refugees” who left their former homes because of policy choices they disagreed with.

Election implications

Paxton faces Democratic state Rep. James Talarico (District 50) in the November 3 general election. Early voting began on October 19 and runs through October 30, giving both campaigns ample time to mobilize supporters around policy messages such as Paxton’s tax plan.

While the proposal promises significant tax relief for families, critics point out that the deductions will not lower a taxpayer’s bill by the full $25,000 or $50,000 amounts. Instead, the benefit is realized through a reduced taxable base, which translates into varying dollar savings depending on individual circumstances.

Nevertheless, Paxton framed the plan as a direct response to rising living costs, emphasizing that “everything’s up except their paycheck.” By positioning the deductions as a way to empower families and promote homeownership, the Attorney General hopes to differentiate himself from his Democratic opponent and rally the Republican base ahead of the crucial midterm election.
