Atlanta’s Downtown area is a hub of activity, with over 52 million visitors annually. To improve navigation and exploration, the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (ADID) has invested in a new wayfinding system. The system, designed by Perkins&Will, Sizemore Group, and Dashboard, aims to create a more seamless and welcoming environment for visitors and residents alike.
Community Engagement
The design team conducted multiple layers of community engagement to understand how stakeholders, visitors, and residents experience the area. The goal was to authentically express Atlanta’s unique character and encourage exploration. The final concept blends the city’s vibrance and dynamic energy with its rhythm and strength, using vivid sunset hues and bold lettering to engage pedestrians.
Maps and signage feature concentric circles to help users estimate travel time and distance from a central point, mitigating the perception that Downtown isn’t walkable. The implementation of this signage will not only improve navigation but also inspire exploration and a deeper connection to Downtown Atlanta.
