ATF crackdown in Louisville nets 50 arrests and 160 firearms seized

Louisville residents saw a decisive law‑enforcement effort this week as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) carried out a large‑scale operation targeting violent crime, gun trafficking and drug distribution.

Operation Take Back America hits Louisville

ATF Special Agent in Charge John Nokes explained that the initiative, part of the nationwide Operation Take Back America, was designed to focus on individuals believed to be fueling violence in the city’s neighborhoods. “We are sending a clear message that those who threaten our neighborhoods will be held accountable,” Nokes said at a press conference.

The crackdown resulted in 43 federal indictments and 10 state indictments. Law‑enforcement officials reported the seizure of 22 pounds of drugs, primarily fentanyl and methamphetamine, along with 160 firearms. Among the weapons recovered were 42 machine‑gun conversion devices, which can turn a semi‑automatic rifle into a fully automatic weapon.

Link to the Harvest Homecoming shooting

Investigators also recovered the last missing firearm tied to the deadly Harvest Homecoming shooting in 2024, providing a crucial piece of evidence for that case.

Those arrested collectively carry more than 200 prior felony convictions, including multiple homicide convictions, and several have alleged gang affiliations, according to officials close to the case.

U.S. Attorney emphasizes community safety

U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner praised the effort, stating, “The amount of effort and coordination it took to plan and execute this violent crime reduction initiative cannot be understated. We have more work to do, but as this initiative shows, we are willing to think outside the box and put in the long hours to make this community safe.”

The operation underscores a continued federal commitment to curbing gun violence and drug trafficking in Louisville, aiming to protect families and uphold the safety of neighborhoods across the city.
