Louisville – This Saturday and Sunday the Norton Sports and Learning Complex in the Russell neighborhood will host the Artists and Afros event, a weekend showcase that puts Black creators at the forefront of the city’s emerging art scene.
Local artists gather for a two‑day exhibition
More than 100 artists from across the United States will display a wide range of works, from sculptures and installations to paintings suitable for homes, offices and public spaces. The event runs from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. each day, giving residents ample time to explore the diverse offerings.
Creative director emphasizes market disparity
Shauntrice Black, the event’s creative director, highlighted the stark contrast between the global art market and the opportunities available to Black artists. “The art market globally is a $60 billion market, and Black artists only get about 2 % of that,” Black said. “We really want to make an impact here in Louisville because we are an up‑and‑coming art city, and we could make a really huge difference.”
Artists focus on community, not just sales
Marcus Cosby, a Louisville‑based painter who has spent his life honing his craft, sees the event as a chance to build lasting relationships. “I feel like when you tap into what your purpose is, and you hone in on your specific purpose and your craft, it develops into something greater,” Cosby explained. He added, “Once you reach out to other people, you realize there are more people that are like me; there is a community for people like me to be a part of. I feel like we have a bigger community, and once that grows, we have more for someone to connect to.”
Why the event matters for Louisville
Louisville has been positioning itself as a regional hub for the arts, and the Artists and Afros showcase adds cultural depth while addressing long‑standing inequities in representation. By providing a platform for Black creators, the event supports families and neighborhoods seeking vibrant, inclusive cultural experiences.
Visitors are encouraged to engage with the artists, learn about their inspirations, and consider how the works might enrich their own spaces. The event is free and open to the public, reinforcing the city’s commitment to accessible cultural enrichment.
