Veteran public‑servant Art Fierro has entered the race for El Paso City Council District 6. At 64, Fierro brings more than a decade of elected experience, including service on the El Paso Community College Board of Trustees, two terms in the Texas House of Representatives and three years representing District 6 on the City Council.
Track record of service
Fierro was first elected to the El Paso City Council on Dec. 17, 2022 and took office Jan. 3, 2023. Prior to that, he served two terms in the Texas House after winning a special election in Feb. 2019. While in the Legislature he sat on the Agriculture and Livestock, Elections, and Licensing and Administrative Procedures committees and sponsored bills on health care, voter rights and education.
Before his state‑level service, Fierro chaired the El Paso Community College Board from 2008‑2015. Under his leadership the college earned national recognition, including a Top 10 Community College ranking from the Aspen Institute in 2015 and multiple awards for student‑success initiatives.
Professional background
By profession, Fierro is a marketing and public‑relations consultant. He has led the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and he has extensive experience in fundraising, media strategy and volunteer training.
Community involvement
Fierro’s civic service extends to board memberships with the Hispanic Leadership Institute of El Paso, the El Paso International Airport Board, and the City of El Paso International Bridge Commission. He also served on a Small Business Advisory Committee appointed by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson and on the ACCT Diversity Committee.
Key positions for District 6
Data‑center policy: Fierro supports the City Council’s data‑center framework and the Climate Action Plan, which prohibit active recruitment of new data centers and set strict guardrails to protect water and other natural resources.
Property taxes: He argues that attracting high‑paying jobs while offering responsible incentives will broaden the tax base, allowing the city to lower the tax burden on residents.
Deck Plaza project: Fierro sees the proposed outdoor amenity as a long‑term investment that should involve private partners and careful planning to protect taxpayers.
Transparency and accessibility: He pledges to work with local media and content creators, keep the city website and YouTube channel updated, and maintain open communication with constituents.
Accomplishments as a council member
During his term, Fierro helped resurface Montwood Dr, Saul Kleinfeld Dr, Pebble Hills Blvd and the upcoming Vista Del Sol Dr II project. He has overseen upgrades to District 6 parks, adding new playground equipment, shade structures, a skate park, walking trails and an upcoming amphitheater at Marty Robbins Park.
Fierro emphasizes public safety, noting that El Paso consistently ranks among the nation’s safest cities. He supports maintaining strong police staffing levels and continued investment in the department.
Personal life
Fierro lives in El Paso with his wife, Anna, and is the proud father of Julianna and Chris. He attended both El Paso Community College and the University of Texas at El Paso.
Voters in District 6 who value experience, fiscal prudence and a commitment to community safety may find a familiar and steady hand in Art Fierro.
